Shamim Mohammad is the Executive Vice President – Chief Information & Technology Officer at CarMax. He oversees the strategic use of technology across the company, including digital innovations and product engineering, to deliver revenue-generating products and solutions that drive competitive advantages. He drives a high-performing entreprenurial technology team and is known for growing and cultivating digital talent by fostering a culture of learning and innovation. Mr. Mohammad is passionate about building organizational agility through the innovative use of technology.
In close partnership with other senior leaders, Mr. Mohammad led CarMax through a massive digital transformation in all areas of the business, including re-platforming all major technologies to create a digital backbone, developing world-class supply chain capabilities, and leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence to power the business. This transformation has positioned CarMax to innovate at scale.
Mr. Mohammad began his career at a technology startup focusing on automating all aspects of small to mid-size retail businesses. Since then, he has served in various diverse strategic leadership roles in startup organizations and Fortune 500 companies across the retail, travel, hospitality, finance, and technology industries. Prior to joining CarMax in 2012, he served as vice president of information and technology for BJ’s Wholesale, where he developed the company’s e-commerce platform, transformed supply chain and distribution capabilities, and advanced data science practices. He was the fifth employee and senior technology leader for the hospitality industry digital startup TravelCLICK, where he created business intelligence and interactive digital media products and technologies from the ground up, serving thousands of hotels around the world. TravelCLICK was ultimately sold in 2018 for $1.5 billion.
In 2020, MIT Sloan CIO Symposium selected Mr. Mohammad as the recipient of the CIO Leadership Award, which recognizes CIOs who lead their organizations to deliver exemplary levels of business value through the innovative use of technology. He is a sought-after thought leader and has been quoted in national outlets such as Forbes Magazine, MIT Sloan Review and The Wall Street Journal. Mr. Mohammad received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and Bachelor of Science in computer science from Angelo State University.
